Outdoor Activities Fort William – With Active Highs

Glen Spean is pretty well know in the canoeing and kayaking world and Askival is an easy walk from the put in for the Spean Gorge section or take out for lower Roy and middle Spean. We are a great base for a white water paddling trip to the West Highlands and there are loads of rivers within an easy driving distance. Andy has run most or them and has a great deal of local knowledge about water levels, up to date info and is happy to offer help and advice on options for the day as well as being a level 3 inland coach and 4 star sea leader, raft guide and general outdoor old guy! We also have a drying room which can be accessed on request by appointment.

Climbing and Mountaineering
Being just a few miles away from countless Munros, Corbetts and classic hills ice and rock climbs Askival is also a great base for hill walkers, mountaineers and climbers. We also have access to local mountain guides and instructors who can offer anything from basic navigation, guided hill walks, Ben Nevis walks, winter skills workshops and guiding the classic climbs. Our drying room is available on request to dry out any wet kit and boots for the next day and you can plan your days out with the OS maps of the area which cover a whole wall of the chalet!

Being the home of events such as the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup there is a fantastic selection of both natural and man made trails in the local area. There are currently 2 downhill tracks that are accessed by the Gondola and a lot more cross country trails from easy to expert at Nevis Range & we are also only a 30 minute drive from Laggan Wolftrax trail centre. There is an outside tap on the chalet for washing bikes and guides and instructors can also be hired for the day if you want to have a stress free day out!
You may also wish to try some of the more classic long distance routes such as the Tour de Ben Nevis, Devil’s Staircase and West Highland Way and there’s plenty more out there to be done!
Skiing & Snowboarding
Being only 5 miles from Nevis Range ski area, which we consider to have some of the best terrain in Scotland we are also keen skiers and snowboarders
and are able to give up to date advice and information on conditions. Andy is also a qualified BASI level 2 snowboard instructor and is available for lessons and coaching throughout the winter.
